Guidance for Residents and Developers

Current Conservation Area Guidance

Each of the 29 conservation areas in Ealing is covered by both a Conservation Area Appraisal and a Conservation Area Management Plan. These were produced by the council in association with local residents, and were last updated in 2007.  They include a lot of detail about the purpose of conservation areas, some fascinating history of the area, and the building styles that can be seen, as well as documenting some of the issues due to unsympathetic developments. They are worth a read!

Conservation Area Review

Ealing Council are undertaking a review of the Conservation Areas, this started in 2020 and is ongoing. CARA and the Conservation Area Panel have been proactive in contributing to the reviews, and would like to see the Creffield Conservation area extended to include Fordhook Avenue, Byron Road, Chatsworth Gardens and Buxton Gardens, as they were built around the same time as the rest of the Creffield area, and share similar building styles. To date, the public have been invited to submit comments on boundary changes to the Conservation Area via Public and Statutory Consultations. We would also like an Article 4 to be applied to the conservation area, to give stronger planning controls and protect our architectural heritage from unsympathetic developments.

Generic Management Plan for all the Conservation Areas in Ealing

A new Generic Management Plan for all the Conservation Areas in Ealing has been written to replace individual management plans, and CARA reviewed and submitted comments on an early version of this. This is now a live document and being used to help determine planning applications. This can be found on the planning section of Ealing’s website:

Design Guidance

To supplement the Generic Management Plan for all of Ealing’s Conservation Areas, a new Design Guide will be produced for each Conservation Area. It is envisaged that each of the Conservation Area Panels will be asked to produce this in association with representatives from the Council. We have produced a first draft for Creffield, detailing the architecture of the area, which we expect to be used by local residents and developers to help guide their renovations. We’ve tried to capture many of the beautiful details on the housing throughout the CARA area, as well as a few pointers on what not to do. The planning department’s Conservation Officer has suggested that we publish this on our website and so here it is:
